Two days before the match, KAS Eupen’s new coach spoke at a press conference about the team’s preparations for the game. He was positive about the early conclusion of transfer negotiations and the timely signing of all new players: “The fact that we’ve been able to train with the full squad for the past two weeks has made our work easier. As a result, we’re less behind schedule than usual. However, the friendly against Seraing showed that there’s still some work to be done.”

Felice Mazzù expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the squad, in which every position is covered by two players. “This means we have a very balanced squad and healthy competitive spirit within the team.”

Commitment and team spirit will be key

Like sporting director Pasquale Sensibile, Felice Mazzù believes that it is not the team with the best players that will win the title. He told reporters: “To be promoted from this second division, you need a solid team, with healthy competition between the players, who play with determination every weekend and really give their all. The individual and technical strength of the players will not be the deciding factor. What matters far more is that every player in the squad plays with the same passion for one another and feels responsible for the shared goal. It is only by maintaining the team spirit we have developed during pre-season that we will be able to have a successful season and achieve our objectives, namely competing at the top of the table.”

Respect for Jong Genk

During his press conference, the KAS Eupen manager declined to say that Jong Genk were the ideal opponents for the opening match. When asked about this, he said: “This season, all four U23 teams are also at risk of relegation. These teams will therefore certainly play differently from last year. They don’t just want to develop their players, but also to be competitive. That’s why we must show the utmost respect for these teams, which have a great deal of talent and quality in their ranks. Under no circumstances must we lose our humility when facing a team like Jong Genk.”

Nicolas Gavory, new captain

At Thursday afternoon’s press conference, Nicolas Gavory was presented as the team’s new captain. Head coach Felice Mazzù explained his choice:

“Nicolas is an experienced player who remains very composed in everything he does; he is capable of addressing the team and getting fired up on the pitch to give a player a stern talking-to when they need it.” Speaking about his new role within the Pandas squad, Nicolas Gavory said: “I feel honored and proud to be captain of KAS Eupen. I will give my all to help the team achieve its goals.”
