Icelandic international Alfred Finnbogason new striker at KAS Eupen

KAS Eupen has signed Icelandic international Alfred Finnbogason as their new centre-forward. The 34-year-old attacking player joins KAS Eupen from Danish first division club Lyngby BK. In the current Danish championship, Alfred Finnbogason has been fielded in all 4 matches, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He signed a two-year contract with KAS Eupen this Friday until 30 June 2025.

Alfred Finnbogason was born on 1 February 1989 in Reykjavik and was initially a highly successful professional footballer in Iceland. With Breidablik Kópavogur, he was cup winner in 2009 and national champion and top scorer in the 1st division in 2010.

In January 2011, he moved to KSC Lokeren and became Belgian Cup winner in 2012. Other successful stations in his career were Helsinborgs IF (2012 – won the Supercup in Sweden), SC Heerenveen (2013-2014 top scorer of the NL-Superdivisie), Olympiakos Piraeus (2016 – Greek champion) and FC Augsburg (2016 to 2022 – 122 games in the 1st Bundesliga and 39 goals).

The newcomer from KAS Eupen joined the Icelandic national team in 2010 and has played 67 international matches so far. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he scored Iceland’s first goal at a World Cup in a 1-1 draw against Argentina. As recently as June 2023, he played in the European Championship qualifiers against Slovakia and Portugal scoring one goal.

Christoph Henkel, general director of KAS Eupen: “The aim of our planning for the new season was to reinforce the centre axis with experienced players. Important criteria in our decisions were will, quality and character. Alfred Finnbogason, who now wants to prove himself in the Jupiler Pro League, fits exactly this profile. We are looking forward to working with Alfred Finnbogason and wish him every success at KAS Eupen as well!”
