The national teams of Qatar and Iran have qualified for the quarterfinals of the Asian Championship in the United Arab Emirates. Six former KAS Eupen players are part of the Qatari team, while Iran’s KAS center-half Morteza Pouraliganji is a first eleven regular.
Iran will face China in the quarterfinals on Thursday, whilst World Cup 2022 host Qatar take on South Korea on Friday.
Qatar and Iran have both made a confident appearance in the preliminary round and qualified without conceding a goal as group winners for the round of sixteen.
So far Qatar has neither lost points nor conceded a goal
Qatar defeated Lebanon 2-0 with their former KAS players Akram Afif, Abdulkarim Hassan, Ali Almoez, Assim Madibo Salem Al Hajri and Bassam Al-Rawi, had an easy 6-0 win against North Korea and secured group victory with a final 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia. In the preliminary round, Qatar reached 9 points out of 9 and scored a goal average of 10-0.
Qatar also failed to concede a goal in the last 16 and defeated Iraq 1-0. KAS Eupen wish their former players and the entire Qatar side every success in the quarterfinals against South Korea.
Morteza Pouraliganji three times in the starting line-up
Morteza Pouraliganji was in the starting line-up for 3 matches of the Iranian national team: In the preliminary round when Iran beat Yemen 5-0 and Vietnam 2-0. The KAS player only sat on the bench when his team was held to a goal-less draw by Iraq.
In the Round of 16, Morteza was back in the starting line-up and won 2-0 against Oman with his team. Now his KAS Eupen teammates are keeping their fingers crossed for him in the upcoming quarterfinals against China.
