After taking part in the Gulf Cup and the U23 Asian Championships, KAS Eupen and Qatari national player Akram Afif is returning to his home club, Al Sadd SC. With 6 current or former KAS Eupen players in the Qatari line-up, Akram Afif scored the winning goal in Qatar’s 1:0 win over South Korea in the match for 3rd place in the U23 Championships.
After such an intensive series of competitions, a player needs to recuperate to be fit for upcoming challenges. Despite KAS Eupen fighting to avoid relegation in its last six ties, it has been jointly agreed by the player, Al Sadd, FC Villareal and KAS Eupen that the best solution for all parties will be to let the player return to his home club, Al Sadd.
Head coach Claude Makelele: “We would naturally have preferred to have kept Akram in our squad, increasing our goal-scoring options, but under these circumstances the best solution for all parties is to let Akram play for Al Sadd for the rest of the season, with the prospect of also playing in the Asian Champions League. I hope that Akram will return to Eupen next season, fully able to focus on AS Eupen and his personal development without having to play in many international competitions. I wish Akram all the best. We are now fully focused on the coming 6 matches. I am optimistic that we have sufficient quality in our squad to avoid relegation.”
