The fifth edition of the East Belgian school football tournament held in Amel and Eupen in the second week of October was a resounding success. On Tuesday, 195 boys and girls from 29 teams kicked off at the sports complex of FC Grün-Weiß Amel. 250 kids from 34 teams convened at FC Eupen’s artificial pitch on Thursday.
The winners of the Eifel tournament were the municipal schools from Deidenberg (3rd and 4th grades) and Weywertz (5th and 6th grades). The Eupen tournament winners were SGO, SGU and PDS.
The big school tournament has been organised for 5 years as a collaborative effort between the Ministry for the German-speaking Community (Department of Sport), KAS Eupen and the East Belgian Football Association. The Ministry acted as host, KAS Eupen assumed responsibility for the tournament management and the East Belgian Football Association hired the referees.
Last year’s tournament in Amel had to be terminated prematurely due to heavy rain and storms, but this time the young football players were blessed with blue sky and sunshine in Amel, a real dream day for playing football. Suitably motivated, the children got stuck in and competed in mixed teams to try and win the tournament.
The skies in Eupen remained overcast, but the mild temperatures also provided optimum conditions here for playing sport. A buzz of excitement was evident at both tournament venues and a great atmosphere prevailed.
Tournament director Alessio Krafft from KAS Eupen’s youth division was able to look back with satisfaction: “The tournament proceeded smoothly at both locations, the organising team did a great job and everyone pulled together. I would like to thank all the helpers and the referees, as well as the teachers and the children who participated. As a reward for taking part in the tournament, each participant will receive a ticket to one of KAS Eupen’s Pro League matches. These tickets will be distributed to schools over the next few days,” announced Krafft.
